Advanced Space
Academy® takes the experience of Space Camp® to a
whole new level! The program challenges its
trainees to not only see things work, but discover
how and why they do! What is the environment like
on Mars and why? How can I become an astronaut or
an engineer in mission control? You will quickly
discover answers to these and many other questions
during your week.
Participants may
choose to train as either a Pilot or a Mission
Specialist. Pilots have the opportunity to fly jet
simulators at Aviation Challenge® and learn
in-depth how the shuttle flight systems work.
Meanwhile, Mission Specialists learn how to
engineer spacecraft and try SCUBA diving in the
Underwater Astronaut Trainer. (Pilots may try SCUBA
diving in designated weeks throughout the year.
Some medical conditions may prevent trainees from
SCUBA diving.)
Other activities
include an exciting and comprehensive team building
experience at Space Camp's own Area 51,
constructing and launching model rockets, attending
information sessions, and trying out many of the
simulators: tumble in a flat spin with the
Multi-Axis Trainer, walk on the Moon with the 1/6th
gravity chair, and move in a frictionless
environment with the Five Degrees of Freedom
system. And there's more!
Trainees in the
Advanced Space Academy® program will then embark on
the ultimate Space Camp simulation: the extended
duration mission, or EDM. Each trainee will be
assigned a position on the space shuttle, space
station, or mission control. Over the course of six
hours, your training and abilities will be pushed
to the limits. Will you be able to fix the West
Star satellite? Will you be able to land the
orbiter on the correct runway? Will you remember
what to do when something goes wrong? (No fret,
there are three two-hour missions to prepare you
for the EDM.)
If six days of
Advanced Space Academy® is not enough, try your
hand at the 13 day program. It is everything in the
six day program (with a twist) and more! At 24+
hours, the EDM becomes much more involved, with the
trainees planning most of their own mission. Take
on roles of researchers and specialize in one of
four topics to learn more about getting mankind to
other planets. It is a great way to become even
more involved, make more friends, learn more about
space science, and have more fun!
While program content
remains similar from year to year, every experience
at Advanced Space Academy® is different. Trainees
will remember new things, have different missions,
and make new friends each time they return to camp.
These experiences build on one another, often
making consecutive trips to Advanced Space Academy®
better than the ones before
Please note that you
do not need to attend Space Camp® and/or Space
Academy® to fully participate in the Advanced Space
Academy® program.
