New HabPoll Added

I’m curious as to what everyone thinks of the current changes going on at Space Camp (program modifications, Training Center Floor changes, etc.) so I’ve started a new poll that asks just that.

A Space Camp Credit Card? Cool!

It would appear as if one can now get a US Space & Rocket Center Master Card now!

Along with MBNA, they seem to be offering a Platinum Master Card. If you apply now, you even get a free USSRC T-Shirt!

Using this credit card will benefit the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and its programs. Since the credit card you currently use most often probably isn’t doing all that much for you, why not get this one and let it do some good for the USSRC?

So go get one, and remember: don’t leave Earth without it! (sorry…couldn’t resist saying it…come to think of it, they should totally steal that slogan!)

Video of the New TCF

Woohoo!

Video shot recently on the Training Center Floor has fallen into my possession. For those of you who want to see a bit more of the changes made to it, enjoy!

Special thanks goes out to “Gus J.” for this video. At the same time, I think he’s the one to…uh…blame…for the audio on it too!

Cernan: Teens Should Go to Space, USSRC: Enrollment

A story posted here at CNN.com and elaborated further in this story has Gene Cernan quoted as saying, “We need to give the kids, the teenagers, a piece of the action.”

…No argument here! And how about college students! Don’t forget me…err..I mean them!

The articles also mentioned Space Camp, and included the following information:

Space Camp registration is up 22 percent over this same time in 2001, and there are no plans to repeat last year’s Christmastime discount, which was instituted to boost enrollment.

So, I guess if you were waiting to see if there would be another discount of the same magnitude as last year, don’t hold your breath.

Space Camp Commander

Infogames, the creators of the game, MoonBase Commander, currently have a contest running where you could win a trip to Space Camp/ASA/etc. In fact, not only do you win a trip, but you get to bring a guest as well! …you could always take your favorite Hab1.com webmaster! 😉 …Just kidding, of course! But you do have to come back and brag that you won!

Best of all, there’s no limit on age! If you’re eligible to attend a camp program, you can enter!

Simply hand print your name, address, daytime telephone number, and date of birth on a 3″x5″ card/paper, put it in a #10 envelope, and mail it to:

MoonBase Commander Sweepstakes
P.O. Box 6646
Maple Plain, MN 55593-6646

And that’s it! It must be postmarked by December 31, 2002 though, so hurry!

Also, this contest is only open only to legal U.S. and Canadian residents, void in Puerto Rico, Quebec, and where prohibited by law.

A complete list of rules and instructions can be found here.

…It’s a shame they won’t be handing out the trips in time for the December 29 – January 3 session! Speaking of which, there are still a few spots open for ASA/Adult ASA…If you’re not sure what to get your child/significant other for Christmas…give the gift of Space Camp!

Additionally, if you’re into strategy games, Moonbase Commander is certainly worth a look. It’s not nearly as complex as other games in the genre, but in its simplicity, it is surprisingly addicting. Don’t believe me? Try the demo.

TCF Renovations Almost Complete!

Renovations to the Training Center Floor are almost complete, according to this press release from Space Camp.

Among the improvements the TCF is seeing is a mock up of the International Space Station!

A little further down the road are plans to enclose the TCF such that trainees on their missions will see stars in the sky and a sunrise every 45 minutes!

Another addition on the way somewhat reminiscent of Space Academy Level II’s former EDMs: “A Habitation Module is also planned, which will allow for extended simulated shuttle missions, including overnight missions that could span 24-hours.”

Exciting changes indeed!

Changes to ASA Program Abound

I reported a few days ago there were changes coming to ASA…the new program outline can be read here.

They’ve changed the pilot track now…those in it will no longer be doing SCUBA. Instead, the pilots will go to Aviation Challenge for some additional training.

I think this makes a great deal of sense. While SCUBA is very fun, it doesn’t really fit in with the pilot track, but a few Aviation Challenge activities will very well, I’m sure.

Additionally, there are two “track-specific labs:”

  • Space Piloting
  • Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC)

The other two tracks look pretty much the same….there aren’t any highly-visible changes to them from the outline.

Also, ASA will again be 6 days long this summer, but 5 during the spring/fall.

Since there’s no time like the present, if you want to register now for next spring/summer, you can do so now at spacecamp.com!
