Skylab is Back

This past Thursday, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center held their annual January gala.

As this year marks the 40th anniversary of Skylab, the Space & Rocket Center held their gala in honor of America’s first space station.  Every living member from all three Skylab missions was in attendance.

Of course, to honor Skylab, the center would have to do honor to the long neglected Skylab trainer, which had been sitting outside behind the center in the elements for nearly two decades, much to the ire of many.

But, starting about six months ago, museum staff began the refurbishment of the trainer with the purpose of having it ready for display in time for the 40th anniversary of Skylab.

Six months later, and the Skylab trainer is in pretty good shape!  Though refurbishment is not yet complete (several components, the telescope mount among them, still rest outside), progress has been impressive.  The hard work of the USSRC staff is certainly on display.

A couple of photos are below, and HabForum user Hotdog posted more extensive photos for your enjoyment.

Welcome Counselors

Space Camp has new counselors (yes, yes…”crew trainers”)!

This very evening, a brand new batch of counselors graduated from training!

Graduation was held in The Challenger Auditorium in Habitat II.

The counselors had been divided into three teams during training–Gibson, Musgrave, and Springer–and provided with a veteran mentor counselor.

Team Gibson graduated first.  In honor of astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson, the team’s namesake, and his glorious facial hair, the newly minted counselors all donned mustaches to celebrate!

Story Musgrave and Bob Springer, the other two teams’ namesakes, both lack in amazing facial hair (and when it comes to hair, Story Musgrave is rather like a seal).

Teams Musgrave and Springer both graduated sans facial hair:

Just like a Space Camp graduation, counselor graduation includes various awards.  Awards were given out for the best mission patch, best test and presentation scores (the much-coveted “Smarty Pants” award, which was an old pair of Space Camp counselor shorts from the late 80s and early 90s), Mr. and Miss Congeniality, and one Right Stuff award.

All-in-all, it seems like Space Camp has gotten themselves a great bunch of Space Camp Counselors!

They’re in for one heck of a good time!

Here’s to wishing them the best of luck and may they eventually end their tenure with the fondest of memories.

Space Camp Reference on Family Guy

Tonight’s episode (Season 11, Episode 9) of Family Guy had Chris at Space Camp!

Granted, Space Camp was placed at the Kennedy Space Center in the episode, so they were a few states off, but it’s always fun to see a Space Camp reference in pop culture.

And they even brought back Jinx!

Space Camp Black Friday Deal

Tomorrow, Space Camp will offer the first 10 Space Camp bookings at $499!

This is a tremendous deal and worth being at your computer tomorrow morning at 9am CST!

Even if you’re not one of the 10, all Space Camp (child) programs will be discounted down to $779 through Monday.

Register here tomorrow, and have a great Thanksgiving today!

Also through Monday, the Space Camp Store is offering free shipping!  It’s a great time to get your Christmas shopping done, and done early!

Promo Videos Pulled

Space Camp has pulled the promo videos I mentioned yesterday, but they were kind enough to send the following information our way:

I just wanted to let you know that we have pulled them down this morning. I got word that there were still edits being done to the footage and voiceovers so we have been asked to remove them while those are being done. I will let you know when they go back live though.

Interesting times, certainly.

Is a Logo Change in the Works?

Yesterday Space Camp posted a new promo video to their YouTube channel.

Titled simply, Space Camp, and running for one minute, twenty-nine seconds, the spot highlights kids at Space Camp and all the wonderful things that make up the experience.

And then at the very end of the video, the Space Camp logo we all know and love morphs into this:

Possible New Space Camp Logo

Obviously, with the Space Shuttle fleet having been converted into museum pieces, the current logo has now offically become dated.

It should come as no surprise if/when an official changeover is made–be it to this logo or something else.

If this is to be the new logo of Space Camp, what do you think? Weigh in with your opinion on the HabForum.

Additionally, a new Aviation Challenge promo was also posted.

Welcome to the New Server

If you’re reading this, you’re viewing Hab1.com from its new home.

Some people have had trouble accessing the website at times, especially the HabForum. This has been the fault of my previous web hosting provider.

I anticipate no such issues on this new server, though there could be a few rough edges left to iron out. Please drop me a line or post a note in the HabForum if you come across anything.

Thanks!

Another Call for Extras

Space Warriors is again looking for extras.  Tomorrow evening, 7pm.

They’ll be shooting a graduation scene and need extras under Pathfinder.

Same rules as before:  No large logos, stay away from wearing clothing that is too revealing.

Extras Needed Again

Space Warriors is again in need of extras tomorrow.

If you’d like to be part of the production, show up at Space Camp at 2pm tomorrow.  Like last weekend, spectators are needed to cheer on the Moonbuggy race!

The details are as follows:

  • No visible logos on clothing.
  • No spaghetti straps or short shorts.
  • Be prepared to be outside in the weather.
  • All extras under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian the entire time.
  • Prepare to be around until about 6pm.

The meeting location will be just like last week, just outside of the Bush Room.
